Synopsis
Karen Brown Tyson found herself laid off at the age of 51. While many feelings could have taken over and made her new path seem dark and bleak, she decided to take the time to trust in God, even when she did not understand the plan fully. Through this experience, she created a 21-Day Devotional to Renew Your Mind After Being Laid Off, Fired, or Sidelined. The book revolves around the G.L.O.W. process, which stands for gratitude, listen, observe, and witness. In each daily reading, she guides you through scripture, interprets it for you, gives you prayers, and action items to allow you to reflect and apply what you are learning to your situation.

Strengths
I love a great devotional and this one ranks near the top of my list. One of the great things about Time to Refresh is that it is easy to read and follow. The author gives short and actionable passages that give you something to study and think about in small doses. Due to my educational background and professional experience in adult learning, this method of “chunking” material into small doses is effective for many adult learners.
Next, the relatable stories make it easy for the reader to connect. The author explains how the scripture relates to her situation and life circumstances. This provides such a wonderful connection of the Bible to everyday life.
Lastly, the gratitude prayers at the beginning of each passage help you to see how to be grateful even during tough situations. This is a wonderful way to start each chapter and has a profound and positive effect on the reader.
My Final Thoughts
Karen Brown Tyson’s devotional Time to Refresh is perfect for anyone going through major life changes, disappointments, or situations that you just don’t understand. This easy to read devotional will guide you through some amazing Bible verses and help you to see the larger picture of God’s plan. I especially loved Day 14, on page 41, that spoke about “patience” and waiting on God to “fulfill his promise.”This was super powerful to many situations in my own life. Mrs. Brown Tyson will lead you to be more trusting in God and inspire you to put your entire faith in him. This encourages you to trust the almighty power and love of God to bring you through whatever your circumstance may be. I highly recommend this devotional that will leave you feeling “refreshed” and inspired to give the wheel to God for your next direction.
